6M7F: Recruit your key leader

Last week I shared “Six Months to 7 Figures,” a Philanthropic Fundraising pilot program on mastering three campaign phases crucial to reaching a transformational gift (or the largest gift an organization has ever received). I talked about the first big phase, building a case for support that resonates with staff, board members, AND potential donors. But once you’ve developed a strong case, what comes next?

The second major phase that makes or breaks your transformational gift potential is recruiting your key leader. This might be a campaign chair or equivalent role that serves as the primary driver and face of your campaign. It might be an existing board member or someone new.

Why is your “key leader” one of the three MAJOR phases of 7-figure fundraising? Simply put, this person becomes your campaign quarterback with the most visibility, knowledge, and/or relationships supporting strategic outreach. Recruiting a key leader who is not only passionate but also well-connected increases your fundraising potential exponentially.

I recently presented to the board of a nonprofit organization where a member said, “set a goal that scares you.” When I've worked with successful organizations, they had a key leader who did not shy away from an intimidating goal. That's when amazing things happen; that's when growth happens. What goals are you setting that scare you, and who are you recruiting to stay focused and positive about that goal?

Of course, this is just the tip of the iceberg on how your case for support and key leader determines your success. If you’d like to be part of this exciting pilot program, please send me a message here on LinkedIn or an email at gudrun@philanthropicfundraising.com and include your interest in “Six Months to 7 Figures.”
